The agency gave no other details, including which Micron products it would be subject to inspection. export controls The United States imposed a series of export controls on chip-making technology to China, fearing it would be used to produce chips for applications such as artificial intelligence that could be used by the Chinese army, and blacklisted several of China’s largest chip companies, including Mi

Report Claims Chinese Banks Show Interest in Hong Kong-Based Crypto Firms

Image
According to a recent report from Bloomberg , Chinese banks are now showing interest in Hong Kong crypto firms. This has surprised the broader crypto community, given that China had once restricted digital currency transactions in the country. In 2021, China imposed a strict law stating that anyone associating with these digital assets is at risk of going to jail. However, digital currency transactions in Hong Kong have risen despite China’s regulatory challenges. Several companies are even leveraging the city’s position due to its proximity to mainland China and as a financial hub. Hong Kong Digital Asset Firms Drawing The Attention Of Chinese Banks The report revealed the major financial institutions in the category, which include Bank of China Ltd., Bank of Communication Co., and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, are either offering their services to digital currency firms or showing interest in providing financial services to them. FDA staff says Biogen’s ALS drug may have a ‘clinical benefit’ on a rare form of the disease

U.S. Food and Drug Administration staff on Monday said Biogen’s investigational ALS drug may have a “clinical benefit” on a rare and aggressive form of the disease, despite failing a broader late-stage clinical trial last year.  The staff made the conclusion in briefing documents ahead of a meeting on Wednesday when a panel of external advisors will discuss whether to recommend accelerated approval of Biogen’s drug tofersen for the treatment of a rare genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. The FDA’s accelerated approval designation is meant to allow for faster approval of drugs for serious conditions that fill an unmet medical need.  The panel will examine mixed evidence from the trial related to tofersen’s effectiveness and safety, and vote on whether it demonstrates whether the drug will produce a clinical benefit in patients with the rare form of ALS. The FDA typically follows the advice of its advisory committees but is not required to do so.  “This is a s

UBS rescue of Credit Suisse doesn’t resolve the U.S. banking crisis

The Swiss government gets an “A” for its speed in addressing the Credit Suisse problem , but it doesn’t resolve the U.S. banking crisis. The question of whether the government should (or Congress has the will) to insure every deposit in the U.S. is still very much in the air. The primary focus for U.S. markets is on the Federal Reserve meeting this week. Here in the United States, the markets can’t seem to agree on what the Fed should be focused on: fighting inflation or avoiding a credit-induced recession. The markets have rarely seen such a wide weekly dispersion in sector performance. Major sectors last week : Technology up 5.7% Energy down 7.0% Materials down 3.5% Industrials down 2.5% Banks down 12% But banks down 12%? That just doesn’t happen, not on a weekly basis. And the decline in cyclical sectors such as materials and industrials is also strange. The decline in cyclicals looks like some traders are betting on an economic slowdown. But what about the tech rally? Two th
