Karnataka Govt Decision Over Reservation: Before the Karnataka assembly elections, the Basavaraj Bommai government of the state has taken a big decision regarding reservation in government jobs and education. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Friday (March 24) that the Karnataka cabinet has decided to end the 4 per cent reservation for minorities, now they will be brought under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
According to reports, the quota of OBC Muslims has been abolished, who are also being termed as religious minorities. CM Bommai said that the four per cent reservation for minorities will now be distributed equally and will be added to the existing reservation for Vokkaligas and Lingayat communities in Karnataka.
The state government took a decision a month before the elections
Two new reservation categories 2C and 2D were created for the Vokkaligas and Lingayat communities during the Belagavi assembly session last year. The cabinet decided to bring religious minorities under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category. This decision has come at a time when about a month is left for the assembly elections in the state.
What did Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai say?
Briefing the media after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that reservation for religious minorities would be abolished and brought under the 10 per cent pool of EWS category without any change.
CM Bommai said, “The four percent reservation for minorities will be divided into two parts between 2C and 2D. The four per cent reservation for Vokkaligas and others will increase to six per cent while Veerashaiva Panchamasali and others (Lingayats), who were getting five per cent reservation, will now get seven per cent.
